Wildlife Oasis

Wildlife Oasis

Lakeland's Wildlife Discovery Centre is a unique and exciting blend of exotic wildlife and interactive 'hands-on' displays, which take you through 3,000 million years of evolution and follow the development of life on Earth - from magic molecules to mischievous monkeys.

Exhibits range from chameleons to computers, from fossils to fossas and include some of the world's most threatened species which are kept here as part of international breeding programmes.

You can enjoy getting really close to nature at the Wildlife Oasis. Butterflies, birds and even bats fly free among the exotic vegetation of the tropical halls. Lizards Wildlife Oasislounge in their open-plan enclosure, and industrious leaf-cutter ants can be tracked as they toil along their suspended rope walk carrying slices of leaf many times their own body weight.

The Oasis is an all-weather attraction. Our tropical hall and butterfly house are ideal venues for those wet days, and our friendly staff are always on hand to answer your queries and to let you meet some of the inhabitants face-to-face. Sunny days are appreciated by many of the inhabitants, though - the lemurs and monkeys being particularly keen sunbathers.

So whether you want to meet the meerkats, contribute to conservation or stroke a snake, the Wildlife Oasis is the place to be!

Our Mission:-

To engender and foster an interest and appreciation of the natural world which, in our belief underpins wildlife conservation; and, where possible to contribute and encourage contribution to the conservation of wildlife and wild places.

The Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is proud to be a member of BIAZA (www.BIAZA.org.uk) the organisation which represents the best of British zoos and which co-ordinates the captive breeding of endangered wildlife.

MAKE A DAY OF IT (or a week or more!)

The Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is located in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (www.arnsidesilverdaleaonb.org.uk ) an area which offers splendid walking, a wealth of native wildlife and many excellent visitor attractions yet with none of the crowds which invade the Lake District.

Local attractions include nearby Leighton Moss (www.rspb.org) which is noted for its bitterns, marsh harriers, bearded tits and otters all of which may be watched from hides.

Levens Hall is one of the north of Englands great stately homes and is famous on account of its gardens - especially the topiary of which it has what is probably the finest example in the U.K. (www.levenshall.co.uk)

Heron Corn Mill (www.heronmill.org) and paper museum is another popular nearby attraction which runs a series of special events throughout the year.

Accommodation is plentiful and includes several award winning caravan and camping sites such as Silver Ridge, (www.holgates.com) and Fell End.
